Hop extract has been shown to dramatically reduce a wide range of menopause symptoms and hot flushes. 120 women with menopausal symptoms took part in a clinical trial. They were randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group took a hop extract pill containing 100 micrograms of the active ingredient and the other took a dummy pill (placebo).
The womenās symptoms were measured using the Greene Scale, which looks at 21 common symptoms including loss of energy, change in mood, night sweats and loss of interest in sex. Women can rate each symptom from 0 to 3, with a maximum score of 63 (severe on all 21 symptoms). The group taking the hop extract showed significant average reductions in their symptom scores at weeks four (38%), eight (70%) and 12 (90%). This compared to much smaller average reductions of the placebo group at the same time points of 1%, 3% and 4%.
The women recorded their hot flushes in a diary before, and after taking the hop or dummy pills. The average number of hot flushes reduced significantly in the group taking the hop pill at week four (36%), week eight (71%) and week 12 (95%). This compared to much smaller average reductions in the placebo group at the same time points of 1%, 0.4% and 0.8%.

A clinical trial was carried out with 60 postmenopausal women with sleep disturbance. The participants were randomised to either receive 500mg of lemon balm daily, 30mg of an antidepressant known as an SSRI daily, (Citalopram), or a dummy pill (placebo) once daily.
The group taking the lemon balm achieved statistically significant improvement in all Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (MENQOL) scores. This is a 29-item questionnaire that scores quality of life in four areas or domains: vasomotor symptoms (hot flushes), psychosocial, physical and sexual. The average reductions in unwanted symptoms for the group taking the lemon balm were: hot flushes 38%; psychosocial 24%; physical 24% and sexual 35%.
The group taking the antidepressant reported significantly less improvement: 11%; 7%; 7% and 8% respectively. The reported scores for the placebo group were lower still: 6%; 4%; 4% and 6% respectively.

Apigenin, a natural plant polyphenol, is the active component of camomile. It may help reduce anxiety and promote better sleep by binding to certain receptors in the brain and producing mild sedative and anti-anxiety effects.
In a randomised, double blind, placebo-controlled trial, participants who took 1500mg camomile extract daily for eight weeks, saw a reduction in symptoms of depression as measured by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (a clinical assessment tool widely used to evaluate the severity of depression).
